We’ve all been in situations that we’ve had to control before they got out of hand when it comes to our job. Whether it was public relations related or an internal matter, learning to be the women in control of the situation without having to resort to manipulation is critical. Here are some tips for manipulating the situation without being manipulative.

Check your emotions at the door. All too often, women try to be manipulative by using their emotions or the emotions of others around them as leverage to get the job done. When you’re trying to effect change, don’t use emotions to make it happen. Use logic and reason and you will see results that last much longer than a change manipulated by emotion.

Don’t control people, control the situation. Trying to control people is like caging a wild animal, they are going to fight you every step of the way. So stop trying to manipulate people and work with your coworkers and colleagues to control the situation rather than change or control the people involved with the situation.

Don’t attack; request change. This goes hand –in-hand with emotions. If you aren’t getting the change that you want, do not attack your colleagues or use underhanded, manipulative techniques to get them to do what you want. Instead, ask for change. If a certain aspect of your company is out of control, instead of assigning blame, request change. This will lead to better results that last much longer and require less energy because you haven’t had to fight your team every step of the way.
